FAIR HARBOR FAIR A SUCCESS DESPITE GLORIOUS BEACH WEATHER!
Text Helen Kornblau
Photos by Peter Schmidt
Event organizer Helen Kornblau reports:
I sent a e-mail to all of the fair participants on Friday, July 2nd - begging them to do a "cloud" dance because the weather forecast was for sunny and hot weather and I thought everyone would head directly for the beach.
Yes, it was very, very hot. Audience turnout was not as large as in past years, but the mood was mellow and friendly..
Results aren't in yet, but I think that we totaled as well as in past years, even though the miscellaneous table didn't sell all of the donated stuff and bidding at the Silent Auction had fewer paricipants.. And all of that was due to the glorious beach day - but that's what everyone is here for.
Bidding was slighly more generous than it has been in recent years for local and New York City restaurants.
The sports and theater tickets always sell well. The "super prizes" included 4 great Mets tickets plus a visit to Keith Hernandez in the press box, dinner at Jean Georges, Gramercy Tavern and many other wonderful restaurants, , a two-night weekend at the Kimberly Hotel (a small midtown boutique hotel), "Rock of Ages" and "Fela", a generous wine donation by West Islip Wines and Liquor (a fantastic store), a Fair Harbor house for a fall weekend, Michael Dickson's generous donation of money towards a complete house's window washing (he's the best!), and of course Kismet's Lazybones Chiropractic.
Since our amazing crew lives in Dunewood where there is no newspaper, I'm going to mention our helpers' names:
Todd and Seth Gilbert, LJ Blut, Josh and Zack Resnick. They are amazing and we hope that they don't grow out of this job by next year (this plug may help!).
We thank all of the Fair Harbor volunteers who worked with amazing zest at the donation table, and look forward to their assistance again next year
